I have seen what Birthday Candles does referred to as schmaltz, and to some extent I concur. However, it is the finest schmaltz you will ever witness. He is a master showman and offers great value for the money. If you've viewed his DVDs, you will have observed all the things he does exceptionally well, such as his crowd work and mugging. Many of his musicians have stayed with him for years, indicating that it must be a good gig. Despite performing their schtick, similar to what they do in the DVDs, they appear to be enjoying themselves. The lineup included everyone: the chubby trumpet players, the gloomy oboist, manou who plays clarinet and bagpipes (and was introduced as a breast cancer survivor), and the eccentric individual who balances his trombone on his chin. I did feel the absence of Carla Mafioletti, but the lovely black soprano from South Africa was a fantastic new addition to his ensemble.
